THIS VERSION OF TURBOLOG IS PUBLIC DOMAIN AND MAY BE FREELY COPIED BY WHATEVER
MEANS YOU PLEASE. IT MAY BE POSTED ON BBS'S. YOU MUST NOT CHARGE FOR THIS
VERSION OF TURBOLOG, EXCEPT FOR THE COST OF MEDIA OR NORMAL BBS ACCESS CHARGES.
YOU MUST NOT REMOVE THE COPYRIGHT NOTICES HERE, IN THE MANUAL OR ANYWHERE ELSE.
YOU MUST NOT ALTER THE PROGRAM IN ANY WAY.
BY LOADING, USING OR DISTRIBUTING TURBOLOG, YOU ARE DEEMED TO HAVE ACCEPTED
THESE TERMS AND TO HAVE AGREED TO ABIDE BY THEM.

===============================================================================
Welcome to the TurboLog demonstrator program. This is a fully functional version
of TurboLog, except for some very minor differences, as follows:
1. There is no printed manual with the demonstrator. Registered users get a 110
page printed manual and a handy quick reference card, plus access to a range
of databases and other services.
2. This program is not callsign coded. The first time you run it you will be
asked for your callsign, and thereafter you will be known by that call. Make
sure you get it right when you enter it! Registered copies of TurboLog are
pre-coded with your callsign.
3. This program will stop working after a random period of time, some time
after each loading. What happens is that a screen blanker process starts
running, from which you simply cannot escape. Any key returns you to DOS.
The registered version also has the screen saver, but it operates after a
user definable time and pressing any key returns you to the program
normally.
4. This program will only log 100 QSOs to disk. After that, everything works
just fine, but the data doesn't get written to the file. On the registered
version you can store up to 2048,000,000 QSO's (if you have a HUGE hard
disk!).
Everything else works EXACTLY as the registered version. I hope this approach,
which allows you to really check the program out, rather than just watching a
demonstration, will appeal to you. Of course, I also hope that, when you decide
you like the program, the random "death" and QSO logging limit will drive you
nuts enough to order a registered copy!

ORDERING INFORMATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This demonstration copy will almost certainly NOT be the current release
version of TurboLog, because of its wide and uncontrolled distribution. The
registered version sent to you will be the latest fully tested release, and may
contain some feature enhancements over this version. Our policy is, as the
saying goes, one of continual improvement.
For price information and to order your latest release registered copy,
please contact:
In the UK and Europe:
John Linford, G3WGV, Canberra Communications, Canberra Lodge, Heath Ride,
Finchampstead, Berkshire, RG11 3QJ, England.
Tel/Fax: 0734 733745 (international +44 734 733745)
INSTALLING DEMONSTRATION TURBOLOG
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most likely, TurboLog will come to you as a self extracting compressed file
called TL.EXE. You may otherwise have TL.ZIP, or possibly, just a big pile
of files, depending on how you came by the program! If you have a big pile
of files, then with a bit of luck you can simply proceed with the INSTALL
operation decribed below (but you might have to be more clever, and use the
file list in the manual to work out where everything goes!). If you are
making copies for other people, please copy the .EXE file if at all possible
to avoid this problem for others.
Assuming you have a TL.EXE or TL.ZIP file, proceed as follows:
On you hard disk, make a directory to put TurboLog into. I suggest you call
this TURBOLOG, or TL. then CD to it. Finally, execute or unzip the TL file on
your floppy (which I have assumed is A:), FROM YOUR HARD DISK. ie:
For TL.EXE file For TL.ZIP file
C>MD TURBOLOG C>MD TURBOLOG
C>CD TURBOLOG C>CD TURBOLOG
C>A:TL C>PKUNZIP A:TL
Now type INSTALL.
Select option F1, new installation.
INSTALL will now set up directories for you and copy files into their rightful
places. You can change the directory names if you really want to.
You will now need to edit your TURBOLOG.CNF file to reflect your personal setup.
There are a great many parameters but to get started you need only set either
your Locator or Latitude/Longitude. Later on you can configure TurboLog to
exactly your requirements.
There is another file on the demonstration disk called INSTALL.TXT. This gives
some more information on the installation process and in addition discusses
machine and performance issues. It is an extract from the full user manual.
To run TurboLog, simply get to your working directory and type TURBOLOG.

ABOUT TURBOLOG AND ITS AUTHOR
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am an active Radio Amateur, holding a full UK call since 1967 and a USA Extra
Class call since 1990. For 20 years I have been professionally involved in the
computer communications business.
Some 6 years ago I started writing quality Amateur Radio software, starting
with a full scale packet BBS and then onto contest logging programs,
PacketCluster access programs and now, as a result of continual requests,
TurboLog. I wanted to write programs that were a cut above the rest, with
quality documentation, careful design and exhaustive testing before release.
My policy is this: I try to write software that works the way I personally like
it. During the early development, or alpha trial period, I get a number of
Amateurs with differing interests to test and offer their ideas. So right from
the beginning it is becoming the work of several people.
Eventually, I decide that the program is ready for release. But it doesn't stop
there! All my users enjoy a telephone help line service, and I really do listen
to what they are saying. A wish list develops, and, in time there are enough new
ideas to warrant a new version. And so it goes on. The result is much more
comprehensive than I could ever manage on my own.
I personally use TurboLog at home. I am an active DX'er, mainly operate on CW,
and am a real fan of PacketCluster. So I can make good use of all the major
features of TurboLog. So far I have something like 10,000 QSO's in TurboLog, and
one of these days I'll get around to putting in all the BC (before
computerisation) QSO's in there as well.
Since its launch in January 1992, TurboLog has found a home in over 400 shacks
in 40 DXCC countries around the world (as of November 1992). It is the fastest
selling program in Europe because it has the greatest range of features to be
found in any logging program.
Canberra Communications is a sole trader company set up to market TurboLog and
other Amateur Radio products. I rely upon the income from sales to pay my
mortgage! Maybe some (very) clever person could find out how to defeat the
demonstrator limitations. Please don't! I need to sell copies to live! Support
what is an honest attempt to bring commercial quality software to the Amateur
marketplace at very low cost (TurboLog 1 took 9 months of 12 hour days to
develop! TurboLog 2 added another 3 months to the tally.).
I hope you enjoy TurboLog as much as I do, and look forward to welcoming you to
the growing band of registered TurboLog users.
73 and good DX,
John, G3WGV.
